Rupert's Land was the name given to a huge portion of land granted by the British king Charles II to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1670 and named after the king's cousin. It included northern Québec and Ontario and much of the west, with the exception of BC. By the 1850s Canadians wanted control over this vast territory. In the British North America Act provision was made for Rupert's Land to become part of Canada. The Hudson's Bay Company agreed in 1869, and transferred control to Canada in 1870.
